Android Auto: Material 3 Expressive redesign, home-screen widgets, stationary YouTube video and Dolby Atmos

The most substantial update in years for Google's in-car platform: a new visual language, customizable widgets, FHD YouTube video while stationary, and Dolby Atmos spatial audio on a first wave of automakers.

Announced on day two of Google I/O 2026, the Android Auto refresh is one of the most tangible deliverables of the event for everyday drivers. The platform adopts the Material 3 Expressive design language: larger typography, smoother animations, and a grid that adapts better to screens of widely different shapes and sizes — from vertical clusters to the ultra-wide displays in premium models.

Widgets and video content

Android Auto introduces home-screen widgets: weather, smart home controls, favorite contacts. According to Android Authority, this is one of the most frequent requests from the community since launch. Google is also adding YouTube FHD video support, usable only when the vehicle is stationary, with automatic transition to audio-only when driving resumes. A pragmatic choice for EV charging stops and breaks.

Dolby Atmos and spatial audio

The most relevant detail for audio enthusiasts: Dolby Atmos support arrives in supported apps and cabins. Google named BMW, Genesis, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Skoda, Tata, and Volvo as initial partners. For the first time, in-cabin audio becomes a positioning argument for Android Auto.

Maps and Gemini in the car

The rollout also folds in the new Google Maps Immersive Navigation (3D view with highlighted buildings, lanes, and signage) and Gemini contextual assistance, as detailed on Google's official blog. It is a coordinated package: the visual stack, audio, and conversational AI now move together.
